Developing a product line and how it helps with art licensing

I’m a guest blog writer for Sketch Design Repeat and my first blog post covers how a product line can help you in the art licensing space. When I first started making products all those years ago, I didn’t realise how creating a range of products could help me license my work. Being at markets and having potential art buyers find me through my products has helped me gain connections and eventually clients.

If you’re looking to start your own product line, my advice is to start small. When you’re first starting out, knowing what designs or products will sell is a bit of a mystery until you get out there and approach family, friends and a wider audience. Starting with a lower cost product that can be made in small quantities, will help you have something to sell without spending too much or having too much product sitting around. I didn’t look at any larger manufacturing until I was confident it was worth spending the extra amount to print larger quantities. And it’s still a process of trial and error when I add new products or designs.
